Moving from the USA to the Netherlands

Your sofa, bikes and the boxes in the garage all cross the Atlantic when you are moving from the USA to the Netherlands. De Bresser brings them to your new Dutch address; our team handles international moves every week.

From the States

Plan the whole move while you still live in the US

Moving to the Netherlands from America does not mean flying over for a quote. Give us a room-by-room tour in a video survey, garage and attic included, and point out what you will leave behind and anything fragile.

Send your US address with city, state and ZIP code, and your Dutch destination. An apartment with narrow stairs is a different job from a house with a drive, so add photos of the entrance.

As you are moving to the Netherlands from the US, your belongings come from outside the EU and Dutch import rules for non-EU goods apply. Read more about sea shipments on our page about an overseas move (in Dutch).

Things to arrange

Let us see every item

Open wardrobes and kitchen cupboards too, and name large or fragile pieces. That helps us judge the volume and whether your own container or shared space suits your route.

Schedule a call across time zones

Eastern, Central, Mountain or Pacific? Note your time zone and the best way to reach you, so we can talk the move through at a sensible hour.

Tell us about floors and stairs

Which floor is your Dutch home on, is there a lift, and how far is the door from the kerb? Those answers shape the delivery.

Packed before it sails

Protected from your US driveway to your Dutch door

For shipping from the US to the Netherlands we advise professional packing: packing paper, corrugated cardboard and bubble wrap all round.

Fragile or oddly shaped items travel in a custom-built crate where needed. Each box carries a number from the inventory list, so you can tick everything off when it reaches the Netherlands. Because you arrive from outside the EU, your signature on that list is needed for import.

After the crossing

You have landed. Is your Dutch home ready yet?

Renovations run late and handover dates slip. If your belongings cannot move in yet, you can book temporary storage (in Dutch); let us know what you will need from it in the meantime.

Timo agrees the timing with our partner agents in the US and with you. If your address or handover date changes, tell us right away so the arrangements can be updated.

Go through the work agreed at both ends before you accept the quote: who packs in the US, which furniture is taken apart, what happens after delivery, and whether port costs and handling are included. Discuss insurance too, as cover and terms can differ from move to move.

Plan together

Decide who meets the movers

Agree who holds the key and who lets the movers in. Still in the US on delivery day? Give us the phone number of the person standing in for you.

Agree assembly in advance

Will a bed or wardrobe need rebuilding on arrival? Add it to your request and we will agree what is included. More on furniture assembly (in Dutch).

Keep arrival essentials with you

Keep passports, medication, keys and what you need for the first few days with you, not in the container. Flight and delivery are separate bookings, so line them up.

Beyond transport

Help with packing and moving

From fragile crockery to large furniture: discuss what help you want to include in your move. The service pages below are in Dutch.

Start by phone or show your belongings on video. We arrange a home visit if that suits your location. After that, you receive a quote based on your move.

Arrival paperwork

Paperwork for moving from the USA to the Netherlands

Moving to Europe from the US in stages, living in another EU country first? Household goods you then move here from that country need no customs declaration, though alcohol, tobacco and vehicles can follow other rules. See moving within the EU (in Dutch).

If you are moving from the US to the Netherlands, De Bresser prepares the inventory list, as with any move across a border. Each item gets a number and each box a note of its contents; if you pack boxes yourself, tell us what is inside. Your copy lets you check everything off on arrival, and customs can see the list when required.

Coming from the US means an import declaration, and to import tax-free it must be lodged through a moving company or carrier. De Bresser takes care of the customs formalities that apply; your part is the information and paperwork. You sign the list we draw up and show proof that you now live here. Check the documents required by Dutch Customs (in Dutch).

Staying longer than four months? Register with your municipality within five days of arrival; book the appointment from the US and ask which documents you need. US citizens need no MVV entry visa, but do need a residence permit beyond 90 days (see ind.nl). Lived here before? See the checklist for moving back (in Dutch).

For your move

Tax-free import is not a given

Customs does not grant relief by default. They look at where you lived, how you used your goods and when you import them. See the rules for removal goods (in Dutch).

Check which proof you can show

Not on the municipal register yet when your shipment is cleared? Dutch Customs names other documents that show you have settled here. Find out which apply to you.

Flag unusual items early

Bringing a car, artwork or plants? Each may be checked more closely. List them, and any recent US purchases, in your request and look up the import rules before packing.

  • Twelve months outside the EU, six months of use

Household effects can only come in free of import duties if you move your normal residence to the EU after at least twelve consecutive months outside it, for example in the US. Each item needs six months of ownership and use, and you must keep using it in your new home. The goods must be imported within twelve months of taking up residence, and for a year after import they may not be lent, pledged, leased out or transferred. Alcohol, tobacco and commercial vehicles, among others, are excluded.

Dutch Customs: household effects from outside the EU

  • Bringing your American car

Your car needs its own import declaration, with copies of its registration and proof of ownership. Once you are registered in the Netherlands, take the import document from Customs, no more than 12 months old, to the RDW inspection in person; the car is checked against European requirements. If it qualifies as household effects, you pay no BPM, the Dutch car tax, but you then file a paper BPM return.

    Netherlands Worldwide: importing your car

  • Dogs and cats arriving from the US

These rules apply if your dog or cat travels within five days of you; otherwise commercial rules apply, with arrival only via Schiphol. Your pet must be at least 15 weeks old and microchipped no later than its rabies vaccination, with a first vaccination given at least 21 days before entry. Bring an official veterinary health certificate, valid for 10 days from issue, and an owner's declaration. Coming from the low-risk US, not via a high-risk country, it needs no blood test. Report your pet to Customs on arrival.

Ongelooflijk!
