Moving to France, with your own things around you

The keys to your home in France are sorted. Now there is just the wardrobe, the crockery and the boxes from the Netherlands. When moving to France with De Bresser, you discuss what comes along, how we pack it and when your belongings can go into the new house.

Your belongings, bound for France

A whole household or just some of your furniture?

Is your move to France permanent, or are you furnishing a second home with things from the Netherlands? That affects what we transport for you. A full household needs different preparation from a dining table, a sofa and a few boxes. So start by telling us your plan.

During the survey we go through your things with you. Remember the storage room and the garden furniture. A video survey lets you walk us through the rooms and point out which furniture stays behind. That lets us discuss the volume and the work you would like done.

De Bresser draws up the inventory list for your move to France. We number everything and note the contents of each box. You receive your own copy. Even on a move within Europe, that overview helps when loading and at delivery.

Will the large wardrobe fit in the new bedroom? Measure the piece itself as well as the doorways. If a wardrobe has to come apart, discuss dismantling and reassembly (page in Dutch). A photo of the French stairwell helps us judge the way in.

Things to arrange

Two homes, two sets of furniture

Furnishing a second home in France? Make a room-by-room list of what goes there and what stays in the Netherlands. That keeps your home here liveable, and you know exactly what you are taking.

Show us the way in

Take photos of the French stairwell, the front door and the turns in the stairs. Note on each photo which floor you will live on. Add the measurements of your largest wardrobe and we can assess the route.

Wardrobes that need taking apart

List which wardrobes and beds need dismantling and which room each one goes to in France. Keep the assembly instructions together. In your quote request, mention furniture assembly (page in Dutch).

Packing for France

Wardrobe, crockery and boxes packed for the drive

A complete household or a few pieces of furniture: everything that comes along gets protection that suits the item.

Crockery goes into packing paper; furniture gets bubble wrap and corrugated cardboard on the edges and corners. Where needed, a fragile or unusual piece goes into a custom-made crate. We secure everything in the removal van, even if your belongings travel on to France after a spell in container storage (in Dutch).

Your points of contact

The team behind your move to France

Henry, Marjolein and Timo are your contacts for the move to France. Tell them whether it concerns your main home or a second address. They go through the belongings, preferred dates and access to the property with you, and coordinate the agreed work.

Access to the property

From the French street to the right room

A delivery address is more than a postcode. For a flat, we want to know which floor you are on and whether there is a usable lift. For a detached house, the drive, the gate and the distance to the front door all count. Pass this on before we plan the move.

Ask the owner or building manager what the rules are for using the lift and the shared entrance. Does space for the removal van need to be arranged? Check with the municipality concerned which permission is required and agree who will apply for it. No single arrangement covers all of France.

If the property is not available yet when you leave the Netherlands, ask about later delivery and temporary storage (page in Dutch). Keep the things you need during that interim period apart from the rest of your belongings.

Plan together

Permission varies by municipality

There is no standard arrangement for the whole of France. So ask the municipality of your new French address what permission the removal van needs. Agree who submits the application and pass the answer on to us.

Lift and entrance arrangements

Moving into a flat? Send us what the building manager has agreed about the lift and entrance, with the lift dimensions and the name of the person who can open the door on site. We then plan the work around that.

If the home is not available yet

Tell us from which date you can use the French address. If departure and arrival are some time apart, we discuss later delivery and container storage (page in Dutch). Keep aside what you need in the meantime.

  • Main home or second home

Tell us if you are moving there yourself or only having furniture delivered. Also mention anything already at the French address, so it is clear what you still need there.

  • Room to unload

Photos of the street, the entrance and any steps show what the movers will find on arrival. Check separately whether local permission is needed; an empty parking space is not automatically a reserved unloading spot.

  • A date that works

Alongside your preferred moving day, fix the key handover as well. Does someone else hold the key in France? Agree who will be there to receive your belongings.

What does moving to France cost?

To price your move to France, we look at the volume of your belongings, both addresses and the work involved. Let us know if you are moving a complete home or only part of your furniture. Discuss packing, assembly and any storage when you request your quote.

How we map out your move

  1. By phone or WhatsApp

You call or WhatsApp us about your plans. We go through what needs to be moved and what information is still needed for your quote.

  2. By video survey

Use your phone to show what needs to be moved, from the living room to the attic. That way the adviser can see your belongings and the way out.

  3. Home visit

The adviser looks at your belongings, access to the property and your wishes on site. You can ask questions about the approach and the costs straight away.

Customs and arrangements

Moving from the Netherlands to France: what to arrange for your belongings

For a move from the Netherlands to your main home in France, the French Customs guidance (in French) lists no particular customs formalities. That guidance on moving from within the EU is not the same as the conditions for importing goods from outside the EU.

Report special items and any car separately. Is it a second home, or are you unsure about certain things? Ask French Customs beforehand which rules apply to your situation. De Bresser handles customs formalities where they apply. You provide the necessary details and documents; any exemption remains a decision for customs. Registration and residence are a separate matter: our French emigration guide (in Dutch) covers them for Dutch nationals; if you hold another nationality, check the rules that apply to your passport.

Read the quote and terms before you confirm. Discuss the sum insured and any storage, and check our insurance page (in Dutch). Make sure the quote states which work at collection and delivery the price includes.

For your move

Your numbered inventory

We make the inventory list and give you a copy. If you pack some personal boxes yourself, tell us what is in them so the contents appear on the list under the right box number.

Agree in advance

Ask which insurance suits your move to France and what conditions apply if your belongings go into storage first.

Prepare your route

Still comparing destinations? Look at our international moves. For your personal preparations, the page on moving abroad (in Dutch) will help.

  • Urgent move

Does your home need to be empty sooner than expected? Ask what is possible on your route to France; the schedule needs coordinating.

  • Container storage

Moving-out and moving-in dates don't match yet? Discuss storage, what you need in the meantime and the later delivery.

Packing for abroad

Well packed for your international move

When you move to France, we advise having your belongings packed by us. You can easily do a few personal boxes yourself, while our movers carefully wrap crockery, furniture and other fragile items.

Do it yourself

A few personal boxes

  • You can pack a few boxes of clothes and personal items yourself. Agree with us in advance what you want to do yourself.

  • Tell us what is in your own boxes. We number everything, make the inventory list with the contents of each box and give you a copy.

  • Let us pack crockery, glassware and items that need extra protection. See our packing tips (in Dutch) for boxes you pack yourself.

  • Keep your passport, medication, keys and things for the first few days separate. Do not put them in with the belongings we take.

Prepare your packing

Our advice

We pack your belongings

  • We protect your belongings all round with bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard and packing paper. We match the material to the item.

  • Edges and corners of furniture get extra protection. We fill empty spaces with packing paper, so items have less room to move inside the packaging.

  • For fragile or unusually shaped items, we arrange custom crates where needed. When loading, we make sure your belongings are well protected in the removal van.

  • We discuss with you what you can and cannot take. Mention special items before the boxes are closed, so any restrictions can be checked in advance.

Can De Bresser move just part of my belongings to France?

Tell us which furniture and boxes you want transported and the address they should go to. Mention if you are moving there yourself or furnishing a second home. Based on the volume, access and preferred period, we discuss the options and your quote.

Do I need to make the inventory list myself?

No. De Bresser draws up the inventory list, numbers every item and writes down what each box holds. A copy is yours to keep. You tell us what is coming and let us know what is in any personal boxes you pack yourself.

Which customs rules apply when moving from the Netherlands?

For a main home, French Customs describes a move from within the EU as having no particular customs formalities. Ask separately about special items or a second home. Rules for imports from outside the EU do not automatically apply to a departure from the Netherlands.

What if the removal van cannot reach the front door?

Tell us the distance from the street, any steps and the width of the access. Send photos and check local restrictions. We then discuss how the job will be done and which work should be in your quote.

Can I pack for France myself?

You can prepare a few personal boxes yourself. For furniture, crockery and everything else, we recommend our packing service. Tell us what you are doing yourself, so the packing and the inventory list match up.

Can my belongings be delivered later?

Discuss your departure date and when your French home becomes available. If they do not line up, we look at later delivery and storage in the Netherlands. We agree the planning and costs in advance.

Ongelooflijk!

  • 8 out of 10
