Bringing your belongings

What will you want to unpack?

The first meal at your own table. Your books back on the shelves. When moving from the Netherlands to New Zealand, you decide which things are worth the trip. During the survey, show us what is in the garage, attic and garden shed too, so it can be part of preparing your shipment.

While preparing, we keep new purchases apart from things you already use. Tell us too which tools, sports equipment or special collections you want to bring. That lets us discuss what needs checking before we start packing.

De Bresser compiles your inventory list. Each item and every box gets a number, and the list shows what each box contains. You get a copy yourself, and customs can use the list where required. For the few boxes you pack yourself, you tell us what is inside.

Read the moving terms beforehand (Dutch PDF).

Things to arrange

Beyond the living room

Also go through the things you don't see every day, such as tools, garden furniture and sports gear. Point them out during the survey, so we can decide together what goes and what needs extra attention beforehand.

Keep new and used items apart

According to New Zealand Customs, new or unused items fall outside the household effects concession. So keep the receipts for recent purchases, and tell us during the survey which items you have not used yet.

Mention special pieces first

Do you have a collection, a large painting or a delicate piece of furniture? Mention these before packing. Together we then choose packaging that also meets the requirements in New Zealand. See our packing service (in Dutch).

Custom-made crates

Fragile pieces safely packed for New Zealand

Large paintings and delicate furniture get bubble wrap and corrugated cardboard all round, plus custom-made wooden crates where needed.

New Zealand sets extra requirements for wooden packaging, so we match the materials to the destination in advance. Every crate and box gets a number on the inventory list, which shows where things are if there is an inspection. When loading, we secure everything in the container so it stays well protected.

Your points of contact

Your New Zealand move team

For a move to New Zealand, your residence documents where needed, your belongings and the delivery come together in one file. Working with you and the partner agents, Henry, Marjolein and Timo keep track of what information is already in place and what arrangements are still needed for departure and arrival.

Two preparations at once

Residence documents and belongings, both ready

If you need a residence document, your boxes may be packed before it is issued. So discuss early which documents you have, when you arrive and when your household goods can be imported. Your own travel plans and the shipment schedule need to fit together.

Before packing, look for soil, insects or bits of plant on anything used outdoors: walking boots, camping gear, the bike, garden tools. Clean them and let them dry. Tell us about wooden objects and anything made from animal or plant material, so the import requirements can be looked at beforehand.

Will you stay somewhere else before moving into your permanent home? Keep the things for that stay separate. Let us know when the home will be accessible, how many flights of stairs there are and whether large furniture fits through the doors.

If needed, we discuss storage before delivery (page in Dutch). For other departure tasks, use the moving checklist (in Dutch).

Plan together

Align documents and shipment

Let us know which residence documents are already in hand and which are still in progress. A student visa alone does not qualify you for the household effects concession. Have your situation assessed before the shipment leaves.

Allow for MPI

MPI may examine goods, and sea containers are always inspected. Have walking boots, the bike and garden tools clean and dry for the survey. Ask beforehand about possible costs for inspection, treatment or storage.

Living elsewhere first

Living at a temporary address at first? Pack a separate suitcase or box for that period and keep it out of the shipment. Discuss whether your belongings should wait for delivery in storage (page in Dutch).

  • Conditions for used household goods

The exemption for household effects comes with conditions. Customs looks at, among other things, a residence document that meets the terms of this concession, the preceding 21 months spent outside New Zealand, and personal ownership and use. New or unused items fall outside the concession. Holding only a student visa rules you out.

    NZ Customs: household effects

  • Documents for customs clearance

Customs lists form NZCS 218, a passport copy, a packing list and shipping documents, among others. A residence document is needed unless you hold a New Zealand or Australian passport. Check which extra papers apply to your goods. We draw up your inventory list; personal declarations and details come from you.

    Documents for household effects

  • Assessment by MPI

MPI compares your declarations and the contents with the import requirements. Goods can be examined, and every sea container gets inspected. A full container and wooden packaging come with extra requirements. Discuss the declarations needed and possible costs for inspection, treatment or storage in advance.

What does a move to New Zealand cost?

The volume of your move and the packing it needs form the basis of a quote. Transport, the work at both addresses and any storage are added to that. Ask separately about handling, levies and possible biosecurity costs. A customs exemption does not mean the whole shipment enters without extra charges.

How we map out your move

  1. By phone or WhatsApp

You call or message us on WhatsApp about your departure address, destination and belongings. Together we work out what is needed for the quote.

  2. By video survey

Use a video survey to show us your belongings for New Zealand. Practical if you are already living there.

  3. Home visit

We discuss whether an adviser can visit you to look at your belongings and access.

Packing and delivery

A box number makes things easy to find

An inspection on arrival is easier to prepare for when it is clear where an item is. That is why we link contents and numbers on the inventory list. Let us know which personal boxes you pack yourself. We recommend letting our movers protect and pack the rest of your belongings.

For a large painting or a delicate piece of furniture, we discuss suitable packaging (page in Dutch); a custom-made crate is an option if needed. Materials and packaging must also meet the requirements at the destination. We agree how furniture, boxes and loose parts will be delivered.

Household goods going outside the EU need an export declaration and an inventory list, as explained by Dutch Customs (in Dutch). We also discuss any storage, insurance for the whole agreed route and the transport arrangements (page in Dutch); check the conditions and exclusions. Our guide to emigrating to New Zealand (in Dutch) covers visas for Dutch nationals and leaving the Netherlands; other passports may mean other rules.

Prepare your departure too

Besides the transport, you also have your own departure arrangements to make. Read more about moving abroad (in Dutch). Keep personal documents and things for the first few days separate.

Packing for abroad

Well packed for your international move

For New Zealand, we advise leaving the packing of your belongings to us. A few personal boxes? Those you can do yourself. Our movers take care of crockery, furniture and anything else fragile.

Do it yourself

A few personal boxes

  • You can pack a few boxes of clothes and personal items yourself. Agree with us in advance what you want to do yourself.

  • Tell us what is in your own boxes. De Bresser makes the inventory list, numbers everything and notes what is in each box. You also get a copy.

  • Let us pack crockery, glassware and items that need extra protection. See our packing tips (in Dutch) for boxes you pack yourself.

  • Keep your passport, medication, keys and things for the first few days separate. Do not put them in with the belongings we take.

Prepare your packing

Our advice

We pack your belongings

  • We protect your belongings all round with bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard and packing paper. We match the material to the item.

  • Edges and corners of furniture get extra protection. We fill empty spaces with packing paper, so items have less room to move inside the packaging.

  • For fragile or unusually shaped items, we arrange custom crates where needed. When loading, we make sure your belongings are well protected in the container.

  • We look at which items may go to New Zealand and which could cause trouble at customs. Our advice comes before packing begins.

Can my used belongings enter New Zealand tax-free?

Yes, if you meet the conditions of the household effects concession. Your residence status, the time you lived outside New Zealand beforehand and your own ownership and use of the items all play a part. Have your situation assessed. New or unused goods are not covered by this concession.

Which documents do I need for my household goods?

You will need NZCS 218, a passport copy, the packing list and shipping documents, among others. Without a New Zealand or Australian passport, add a residence document; further declarations may apply. De Bresser handles customs formalities and tells you before shipping which personal papers to supply.

Will my belongings be checked for biosecurity?

MPI reviews the paperwork and can inspect goods. Inspection is compulsory for sea containers. That is separate from the customs exemption for your used household goods. Discuss beforehand which items need extra attention and what costs inspection or treatment could bring.

Do I make the packing list for New Zealand myself?

No. The inventory list is our job: every item gets a number and every box a list of its contents. You receive your own copy. Do tell us what is in any boxes you pack yourself, and mention special items before packing.

What if my new home is only available later?

Mention it when you request a quote, so we can include storage and a later delivery. Keep the things for your temporary stay separate. Tell us when you get access and which rules apply to loading, unloading and using a lift.

How long does the move to New Zealand take?

The timing depends on transport, departure, document checks and handling on arrival. Any inspection and when your home is ready also play a part. Ask about the expected schedule for your shipment; a port arrival date is not a fixed delivery date.

Ongelooflijk!

  • 8 out of 10
