Start from abroad

Organise your move while you still live abroad

You do not have to travel to the Netherlands before you request a quote. Show us what is coming in a video survey. Walk through every room, the storeroom included, and point out what stays behind and which pieces need extra care.

Give us your current address abroad and your Dutch destination. An upstairs flat with a narrow staircase takes different preparation from a house with a driveway, so send photos of the access as well.

Where you leave from decides the paperwork for your belongings. Your nationality decides whether you need an MVV entry visa: Canadians and Australians do not, South Africans and Indians may. Shipping household goods to the Netherlands? Read about an overseas move (in Dutch).

Things to arrange

Show everything that is coming

Open the cupboards and show what you keep in storage too. Point out large or fragile pieces, so the survey covers more than just the living room.

Pick a good time to talk

Moving from Canada to the Netherlands? Tell us your time zone and how to reach you, so we can agree a time to talk.

Tell us the floor level too

Note the floor, any lift and the distance from street to front door. That is how we prepare the work at your Dutch address.

Packed for the crossing

Your belongings well protected when moving to the Netherlands

We recommend having your belongings packed by professionals before they leave, wrapped all round in bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard and packing paper.

Shipping furniture to the Netherlands? Fragile or unusual pieces go into a custom-made crate where needed. Every box gets a number on the inventory list, so on delivery you can find everything by number. If you come from outside the EU, you sign that list for import.

Arrival in the Netherlands

You have arrived. Is your new home ready for your things?

Building work can overrun, or the key handover may slip. Nowhere to put your belongings yet? Then arrange temporary storage (in Dutch), and tell us which things you need in the meantime.

Timo keeps the planning in step with you and our partner agents abroad. New address or a new handover date? Let us know at once, and we will update the arrangements.

The cost of moving to the Netherlands depends on volume, packing, route and whether your own container or groupage (a shared container) suits you. In your quote, check who packs at both addresses, what is dismantled and what happens after delivery. Ask us about insurance; cover and terms can vary.

Plan together

Plan who receives your belongings

Make it clear who has the key and who will receive the movers. If you cannot be there yourself, pass on that person's phone number.

Discuss reassembly in advance

Does a wardrobe or bed need reassembling after arrival? Say so in your request and agree what to include; see furniture assembly (in Dutch).

Keep first-day essentials separate

Decide what comes with you and what follows later. Carry travel documents, keys and first-day essentials yourself; your trip and the delivery are separate arrangements, so plan them together.

Beyond transport

Help with packing and moving

From fragile crockery to large furniture: discuss what help you want to include in your move. The service pages below are in Dutch.

Destinations

Where in the Netherlands will you live?

Moving to Tilburg, Oisterwijk, Den Bosch or another Dutch town? Check our service area (in Dutch) and send us your delivery address.

  • Tilburg

Your household goods from abroad, delivered in Tilburg.

  • Oisterwijk

Choose how we view your belongings

Start by phone or show your belongings on video. We arrange a home visit if that suits your location. After that, you receive a quote based on your move.

  1. By phone or WhatsApp

You call or message us on WhatsApp about your departure address, destination and belongings. Together we work out what is needed for the quote.

  2. By video survey

In a video survey you show us what you are taking with you. Also handy if you still live abroad.

  3. Home visit

We discuss whether an adviser can visit you to look at your belongings and access.

Import and registration

Your belongings and your registration each need their own papers

Moving from another EU country? Then your household goods need no customs declaration, although separate rules can apply to alcohol, tobacco and vehicles, among other things. Check the information on moving within the EU (in Dutch).

De Bresser draws up the inventory list for every cross-border move, within Europe too. We number everything and record what each box contains. Tell us what is in any boxes you pack yourself. You receive a copy to find your things by number, and where needed the list is available to customs.

From outside the EU, an import declaration is required, and for duty-free import it has to go through a moving or transport company. De Bresser handles the customs formalities where they apply. You supply the details and documents: you sign the inventory list we prepare and provide proof that you have settled in the Netherlands. See the documents Dutch Customs asks for (in Dutch).

Staying over four months? Register with your municipality within five days of arrival; book an appointment before you leave and ask which documents to bring. Without EU, EEA or Swiss nationality, a stay over 90 days needs a residence permit (see ind.nl). Lived here before? Use the checklist for moving back (in Dutch).

For your move

Duty-free import comes with conditions

Relief is not automatic. Your residence history, the use of your belongings and the moment of import all count. Read the conditions for household effects (in Dutch).

Discuss what proof you can provide

No proof of municipal registration yet? Dutch Customs lists alternative documents to show you have settled. Check which ones fit your situation.

Report special items in advance

Moving from South Africa to the Netherlands with a car, art or plants? These can mean extra checks: list them in your request and check the import rules first.

  • Twelve months abroad, six months of use

Dutch Customs grants the exemption only if you move your normal residence to the EU after at least twelve consecutive months outside it. You must have owned and used the goods for at least six months and keep using them in your new home. Import them within twelve months of taking up residence, and do not lend, pledge, lease out or transfer them for twelve months after import. Alcohol, tobacco, commercial vehicles and non-portable professional equipment are excluded.

Dutch Customs: moving to the Netherlands

  • Proof that you have settled here

Besides the signed inventory list, your removal company needs your municipal registration certificate showing the date you settled here. Not registered yet? Then proof of deregistration abroad, plus for example your employment contract or tenancy agreement, can show that you are settling in the Netherlands.

Dutch Customs: documents for the exemption

  • A car or motorcycle has its own route

A vehicle needs its own import declaration through your removal company, filed before the RDW inspection for a Dutch registration number. Once the duty exemption is granted, you can also apply for exemption from BPM, the Dutch car and motorcycle tax. For the inspection you must be registered with your municipality and attend in person. Once you live here, driving on foreign plates needs a short-term tax exemption, applied for in advance and valid for two weeks at most.

Ongelooflijk!

    Fijne verhuizers alles goed geregeld.
2de keer verhuisd was weer top.
