Taking your things to Australia

Start in the shed and storeroom too

If you are moving to Australia from the Netherlands, give the bike in the shed as much attention as the sofa in the living room. What will you take, what stays behind and what do you need straight after arrival? We go through your belongings with you before we propose how to ship them.

During the survey, show us your camping gear, garden furniture and wooden items as well. Anything used outdoors needs cleaning before it is packed, and we talk that through with you. For a large wardrobe, we measure the parts and look at the protection and dismantling it needs.

De Bresser takes care of the inventory list. Every item and box gets a number, and we record what each box contains. You receive your own copy, and where needed we use the list for customs. If you pack a few personal boxes yourself, simply tell us what is in them.

Things to arrange

Show us your outdoor things too

Have bikes, camping gear, garden furniture and wooden items ready for the survey, even if they are still in the shed. Note what any unusual pieces are made of, so we can discuss them in advance.

No boxes marked 'miscellaneous'

Packing a few personal boxes yourself? Write down what each one holds, without catch-all words like 'miscellaneous'. Pass those details on to us and we put the contents on the numbered inventory list.

Measure large furniture

Measure large wardrobes, beds and tables and note whether they come apart. During the survey, discuss what protection suits them for the long voyage and which pieces need dismantling and reassembly (page in Dutch).

Packing and securing

From clean shed items to a custom-made crate

You clean your outdoor items before packing and let them dry properly. We then protect your household goods for the sea voyage to Australia.

Furniture, glassware and tools get a full layer of bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard and packing paper. Special pieces go in a custom-made crate if they call for it, and everything is firmly secured in the container. Each box's contents go on the numbered inventory list, so an inspected box can be traced.

Preparing your departure

Clean and dry first, then pack

Take your time with the things you use outdoors. Mud in a bike tyre, soil under a flowerpot or leftovers in the barbecue should not end up in the packaging. Let cleaned items dry completely, and tell us in advance about anything made of wood, plant material or animal material.

Australia's agriculture department, DAFF, explains which items need attention when preparing your personal effects. Check anything you are unsure about before packing. Thorough cleaning does not replace a possible inspection on arrival.

Your flight and your belongings each follow their own schedule. Discuss which things you will need yourself in the first weeks and when you can get into your new home. For an apartment, that includes arrangements for the goods lift and a loading bay.

If you must leave your current home before the new one is ready, we look at temporary storage (in Dutch). Moving back to the Netherlands works differently.

Plan together

Plan the cleaning

Clean bikes, garden tools and the barbecue before packing day and let them dry completely. Allow plenty of time, so nothing goes into a box wet. Handing items over clean does not rule out an inspection once they reach Australia.

Flag uncertain items early

Unsure about items made of wood, plant material or animal material? Set them aside and tell us before the boxes are sealed. That way, we can check whether they are allowed in before everything is packed.

Your shipment comes later

Your belongings will not arrive at the same time as your flight. Pack documents, medicines and things for the first weeks in your own luggage. Moving into an apartment? Ask ahead about the goods lift and a loading bay.

  • Form B534 and your list of goods

For unaccompanied personal effects, the Australian Border Force requires form B534, a statement in your name, which we prepare and you sign. Shipping documents and a packing list go with it, among other paperwork. For the duty-free concession, furniture and household goods normally need at least twelve months of personal ownership and use before departure, whatever your citizenship or visa. Report new purchases separately; customs decides whether you and your goods meet the conditions.

    ABF: unaccompanied personal effects

  • Items with soil, plants or wood

DAFF reviews the documents and may inspect the goods. Declare garden equipment, outdoor sports gear and wooden items, among others. Check that uncertain items are allowed before packing. Treatment, re-export or destruction may be needed, at a cost.

    DAFF: personal effects and biosecurity

  • A clear description for every box

A label such as ‘miscellaneous’ tells an inspector very little. Let us know what is in your personal boxes and what any unusual items are made of. We record the contents and box numbers on the inventory list, so inspected items can be traced.

What does moving to Australia cost?

The volume of your belongings, the packing and the transport you choose determine much of the price. Access at both addresses and any storage also count. Ask for the quote to state which handling and inspection costs are included and which depend on the assessment in Australia.

How we map out your move

  1. By phone or WhatsApp

You call or message us on WhatsApp about your departure address, destination and belongings. Together we work out what is needed for the quote.

  2. By video survey

Walk us through what you are taking during a video survey. Handy if you are already in Australia yourself.

  3. Home visit

We discuss whether an adviser can visit you to look at your belongings and access.

Packing and transport

Protection for the entire route

Shipping furniture to Australia? A tabletop, glassware and your tools each need different protection. For an international move we recommend letting us do the packing. We use bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard and packing paper, protect corners and fill empty spaces. For special pieces we can arrange custom-made crates.

We agree what happens in the Netherlands, in transit and on delivery of your sea freight (page in Dutch). Ask which handling charges are included and how any inspection, treatment or storage is charged. Have the insurance for transport and storage set down in writing too, with the conditions for your belongings.

On the Dutch side, household goods going to Australia need an export declaration and an inventory list, as Dutch Customs explains (in Dutch). De Bresser prepares the list and handles all customs formalities for your move. You supply the personal details, documents and signature required. Visa rules depend on your nationality; our guide to emigrating to Australia is in Dutch and written for Dutch nationals.

Compare like for like

Comparing movers to Australia? Check which work in the Netherlands and in Australia the price covers, and how extra costs are agreed if, say, storage is needed or the delivery changes.

Which items and which route?

Discuss the value of your belongings and special items. Make sure you have in writing what cover and conditions apply during collection, transport, any storage and delivery.

Besides the transport, you also have your own departure arrangements to make. Read more about moving abroad (in Dutch). Keep personal documents and things for the first few days separate.

More services

What help suits your move?

Packing help, assembly and storage are all up for discussion. We record what your move to Australia includes. An overview of all our moving services is available in Dutch, as are the service pages below.

  • Full-service move

Leave the packing, unpacking and assembly to us as well. We agree in advance which tasks you want us to do.

  • Packing service

For your move to Australia, we recommend that our movers do the packing, with proper protection for fragile items.

  • Moving box hire

Packing a few personal boxes yourself? Discuss which boxes and materials you need for that.

  • Furniture assembly

Discuss which furniture needs to be taken apart and what assembly is included on delivery.

  • Piano moving

Give us the dimensions and discuss packing, transport and access at both addresses.

  • Private storage

Discuss what stays in the Netherlands for now and when you want to receive these items.

Packing for abroad

Well packed for your international move

We advise letting our team pack your belongings for Australia. A few personal boxes? Fine to do yourself. Crockery, furniture and other fragile items are packed with care by our movers.

Do it yourself

A few personal boxes

  • You can pack a few boxes of clothes and personal items yourself. Agree with us in advance what you want to do yourself.

  • Tell us what is in your own boxes. De Bresser makes the inventory list, numbers everything and notes what is in each box. You also get a copy.

  • Let us pack crockery, glassware and items that need extra protection. See our packing tips (in Dutch) for boxes you pack yourself.

  • Keep your passport, medication, keys and things for the first few days separate. Do not put them in with the belongings we take.

Prepare your packing

Our advice

We pack your belongings

  • We protect your belongings all round with bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard and packing paper. We match the material to the item.

  • Edges and corners of furniture get extra protection. We fill empty spaces with packing paper, so items have less room to move inside the packaging.

  • For fragile or unusually shaped items, we arrange custom crates where needed. When loading, we make sure your belongings are well protected in the container.

  • Which items may go to Australia, and which could run into problems at customs? We advise you on that before packing starts.

What should I clean before my move to Australia?

Before packing, check anything carrying soil, food residue, or plant or animal material, such as bikes, garden furniture and camping gear. Clean and dry these items. Discuss uncertain items first and read the guidance under the import rules on this page. Cleaning does not guarantee you will avoid an inspection.

Are my used belongings free of import duty?

The Australian Border Force decides that. For furniture and household goods, one factor is twelve months of personal ownership and use before departure. New goods and other categories are assessed separately. Check how the conditions apply to your shipment before you decide what to take.

Who draws up the inventory list?

De Bresser makes that list and numbers everything that goes. For each box we note the contents. You receive a copy, and the list is available to customs where needed. For any personal boxes you pack yourself, tell us what is in them.

How much does a move to Australia cost?

It depends on your volume, the packing, the transport and access at collection and delivery. Inspection, treatment or storage can add costs. Ask for a quote based on your actual belongings, and discuss which costs are included and how any extra costs are agreed.

When will my furniture be delivered?

Port arrival is not the same as delivery to your door. Document checks, any inspection and transport to your address come next. We talk you through the expected timing for your shipment. Keep personal documents and essentials for your first few weeks out of the removal shipment.

How do we arrange insurance for Australia?

Discuss the value of your belongings and any special pieces. Have it set down which insurance applies during collection, transport, any storage and delivery, including conditions and exclusions. Do not assume that domestic cover automatically extends to this overseas move.

Ongelooflijk!

  • 8 out of 10
