Bringing your things

Which things will you use again in Dubai?

Moving from the Netherlands to Dubai starts with your own things. The dining table that seats everyone, the crockery, the bookcase full of books. First decide: what goes with you, what stays in the Netherlands and what do you want delivered later?

During the survey, we discuss the volume of your belongings and how much help you want with packing. Show us large furniture, fragile parts and the things in your storage room. Already in Dubai? A video survey lets us go through it remotely.

Also tell us which furniture you bought recently. Used household goods fall under different import rules than new items. We factor what is in your shipment into the preparation, and agree who supplies which documents.

Things to arrange

Take, leave or send later

Split your things into three groups: what goes to Dubai, what stays in the Netherlands and what follows later. Start with the large furniture. For the things that follow later, you can discuss private storage (page in Dutch).

Used and new kept apart

Tell us about furniture and appliances you bought recently and keep the receipts. The Dubai Customs exemption is meant for used household goods when you first take up residence; new items are not covered. On the inventory list, we keep those two groups apart.

Tell us first, then pack

Are you taking medicines, plants or food? Tell us before packing starts. In Dubai, some goods are prohibited or subject to separate import requirements. Set these items aside until it is clear what you can take.

Packing for Dubai

How your dining table, crockery and bookcase travel to Dubai

With sea freight, the port is only a stopover, so we pack your things for the whole route, right into your home in Dubai.

Crockery and glass get packing paper and bubble wrap, and the edges of your table and bookcase get corrugated cardboard. Fragile or unusually shaped pieces go into a custom-made crate where needed. In the container, we secure your belongings firmly. Moving into an apartment? Send us the dimensions of the lift and doors so we can prepare the delivery accordingly.

Your points of contact

Your team for the move to Dubai

Your departure, documents and delivery need to fit together. Henry, Marjolein and Timo work on international moving files and keep in touch with clients and partner agents. With them, you discuss what is already settled for your move and what still needs to be arranged.

Arrival and delivery

Plan your arrival separately from your belongings

Your flight date may be set, but that does not fix a delivery date for your furniture. Tell us when you arrive in Dubai, when you get access to your home and which residence documents are already available.

With sea freight, arrival at the port is a stopover. Customs clearance and transport to your home follow after that. We discuss the expected schedule for your shipment and the arrangements with the parties involved. Keep what you need for settling in out of the shipment.

Moving into an apartment? Ask the building manager about the rules for the goods lift, the loading bay and access for movers. Share the dimensions of the lift and doors. That way we can prepare the delivery for the building you will actually live in.

Moving the other way has its own import rules; read about moving back to the Netherlands. Our moving checklist (in Dutch) helps you track everything else.

Plan together

Which documents are ready?

Tell us which residence documents you already have and which are still being processed. Still waiting for your residence visa when the shipment leaves? Discuss this beforehand, as it can affect customs clearance.

After the port comes one more step

Arrival at the port does not mean delivery. Customs clearance comes first, then transport to your home. So make sure your own luggage covers what you need for your first stay.

Arrangements with the building manager

Ask your building manager when the goods lift and loading bay can be used. Send us the dimensions of the lift and doors too. Also ask whether movers need to be registered with the building in advance.

  • Used household goods and new purchases

The exemption applies to used household goods of foreign nationals settling in the UAE for the first time. Dubai Customs asks for proof of work and residence, import in your own name, a quantity that suits furnishing a home and a complete packing list. New items fall outside this exemption. An exemption from import duty does not make transport and handling free of charge.

    Conditions for used household goods

  • Your documents and residence visa

For customs clearance, Dubai Customs lists a copy of your passport or Emirates ID, a copy of your residence visa and a list of goods. If your residence visa will not be ready when the shipment leaves, discuss beforehand what that means for clearance. De Bresser handles the customs formalities and discusses which personal details and documents you supply. Customs assesses the goods.

    Procedure for personal effects

  • Check what you want to take

Tell us about medicines, plants and food before packing. Some goods are prohibited or subject to separate import requirements. Check the official list for your belongings. Tell us about new purchases so we can separate used and new items on the inventory list. Check that your name matches across your personal documents.

What does moving to Dubai cost?

The price depends on how much you take and how much of the work you want us to do. Volume, packing and access at both addresses all count. Ask which parts are included: collection, packing, transport, customs clearance and delivery. Also discuss any storage or extra work needed because of access.

How we map out your move

  1. By phone or WhatsApp

You call or message us on WhatsApp about your departure address, destination and belongings. Together we work out what is needed for the quote.

  2. By video survey

You show us what you are taking via a video survey. Also handy if you already live in Dubai.

  3. Home visit

We discuss whether an adviser can visit you to look at your belongings and access.

Transport and arrangements

Well packed, with clear arrangements

Your belongings need protection during loading, transport and unloading. Discuss the packing, especially for glass, fragile edges and loose parts, and see our packing service (in Dutch). Everything is protected all round and packed with care. De Bresser draws up the inventory list, numbers everything and records the contents of each box. You receive your own copy. Let us know the contents of any personal boxes you pack yourself.

On the Dutch side, household goods going to a country outside the EU need an export declaration and an inventory list; see the Dutch Customs explanation (in Dutch). De Bresser handles all customs formalities for your move, and you supply the personal details and documents needed. For your overseas move to Dubai, have the insurance for transport and any storage recorded separately. For your residence visa and settling in, see preparing your move to Dubai, our Dutch-language guide for Dutch nationals.

Quotes from international movers to Dubai only line up once the work is clearly defined; read more about overseas transport (in Dutch). Also discuss what happens if your home becomes available later and how extra costs are agreed. Keep what you need for settling in out of the shipment.

Office space with white desks and cabinets

For your move

Compare like for like

Have the quote state which work in the Netherlands and in Dubai is included in the price. Also ask how extra costs are handled, for example for storage or a changed delivery.

Which items and which route?

Discuss the value of your belongings and special items. Make sure you have in writing what cover and conditions apply during collection, transport, any storage and delivery.

Prepare your departure too

Besides the transport, you also have your own departure arrangements to make. Read more about moving abroad (in Dutch). Keep personal documents and things for the first few days separate.

More services

What help suits your move?

Discuss help with packing, assembly and storage. We record what is part of your move to Dubai. You can also view all our moving services (in Dutch). The service pages below are in Dutch too.

  • Full-service move

Leave the packing, unpacking and assembly to us as well. We agree in advance which tasks you want us to do.

  • Packing service

For your move to Dubai, we recommend letting us pack your belongings, with suitable protection for everything fragile.

  • Moving box hire

Packing a few personal boxes yourself? Discuss which boxes and materials you need for that.

  • Furniture assembly

Discuss which furniture needs to be taken apart and what assembly is included on delivery.

  • Piano moving

Give us the dimensions and discuss packing, transport and access at both addresses.

  • Private storage

Discuss what stays in the Netherlands for now and when you want to receive these items.

Packing for abroad

Well packed for your international move

For the move to Dubai, we recommend having us pack your belongings. You are welcome to fill a few boxes of your own. Our movers carefully pack crockery, furniture and other fragile items.

Do it yourself

A few personal boxes

  • You can pack a few boxes of clothes and personal items yourself. Agree with us in advance what you want to do yourself.

  • Tell us what is in your own boxes. De Bresser adds the contents to the inventory list, numbers everything and gives you a copy.

  • Let us pack crockery, glassware and items that need extra protection. See our packing tips (in Dutch) for boxes you pack yourself.

  • Keep your passport, medication, keys and things for the first few days separate. Do not put them in with the belongings we take.

Prepare your packing

Our advice

We pack your belongings

  • We protect your belongings all round with bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard and packing paper. We match the material to the item.

  • Edges and corners of furniture get extra protection. We fill empty spaces with packing paper, so items have less room to move inside the packaging.

  • For fragile or unusually shaped items, we arrange custom crates where needed. When loading, we make sure your belongings are well protected in the container.

  • We check which items can go to Dubai and what could cause problems at customs, and advise you on this before packing begins.

Can my used belongings enter Dubai without import duty?

Yes, subject to conditions, if you are a foreign national settling in the UAE for the first time. Dubai Customs requires, among other things, used goods, proof of work and residence, import in your own name and a complete packing list. New purchases fall outside this exemption. Have your situation assessed in advance and see the conditions and documents.

Which documents do I need for my belongings?

For personal effects, Dubai Customs lists a copy of your passport or Emirates ID, a copy of your residence visa and a list of goods. De Bresser draws up the inventory list and handles all customs formalities. Before departure, we discuss which personal details and documents you supply. Customs assesses the goods.

What if my residence visa is not available yet?

Discuss this before the shipment leaves. Get advice on what the missing visa means for customs clearance and for the schedule of your belongings. Do not assume your goods can be released without the required documents.

When will my furniture arrive at my address in Dubai?

Arrival at the port is a stopover. Customs clearance and transport to your home follow after that. Discuss the expected schedule for your shipment and tell us when your home will be accessible. Keep what you need for settling in separate; your flight and the delivery do not have to coincide.

How are my belongings insured in transit?

For your overseas move, have the insurance for collection, transport, any storage and delivery set out separately in writing. Discuss the value of your belongings, special items, the conditions and exclusions. Cover for a domestic move does not automatically apply to this route.

What if my home in Dubai is not ready yet?

Let us know before the schedule is set and discuss possible storage in the Netherlands and a later delivery. Ask which costs and arrangements apply. Keep the things you need in the meantime out of the stored belongings.

Ongelooflijk!

  • 8 out of 10
