Taking your belongings to Germany

What goes with you across the border?

A sofa that has to come along, a wardrobe that comes apart and a few personal boxes you want to pack yourself. If you are moving to Germany from the Netherlands, planning starts with an overview of your things. The storage room, attic and garden furniture count too.

During the pre-move survey we discuss the volume of your belongings and access to both homes. You tell us which jobs you will do yourself and where you would like help. With a video survey you can show us the rooms and larger furniture remotely.

Do you already have the keys, or is the date still open? Let us know straight away. We can then discuss what can be arranged for collection and delivery. For the rest of your preparations, read more about moving abroad (in Dutch).

Measure large furniture and the doorways in your new home. A wardrobe that fits through the front door can still get stuck on the stairs. With your quote request, ask about dismantling and reassembly (page in Dutch).

Read the moving terms beforehand (Dutch PDF).

Things to arrange

Look outside and upstairs too

Do not leave the garden furniture, the attic or the storage room off your overview. Include them in the survey so the volume is right. Anything you would rather not take to Germany can be set aside before the survey.

Measurements from the German end

No access to your new home yet? Ask the landlord or estate agent for measurements or photos of the stairwell and the lift. That way we can check in advance which pieces will need furniture assembly (in Dutch).

A list, even within the EU

Packing a few personal boxes yourself? Tell us what is in them. De Bresser adds the contents to the numbered inventory list, even for a move within the EU, and you receive a copy.

Packing for Germany

Your sofa and wardrobe, well packed across the border

Your belongings travel to Germany in our removal van, and we pack everything so it is protected during loading, driving and unloading.

A sofa is wrapped all round in bubble wrap and corrugated cardboard, and a wardrobe that comes apart is packed piece by piece. For fragile or unusually shaped items we arrange a custom-made crate where needed. In the van, everything is strapped down for the drive to your new address in Germany.

Preparing for moving day

When can your things go into the new house?

Your old home has to be empty, but you may only get the keys to the new one later. Put the two dates side by side. We then discuss collection, transport to Germany and delivery to your address.

Tell us the floor, whether there is a lift and the distance from the street to the front door. Photos of the entrance and stairwell help us discuss the situation. For a flat, also ask when the lift or shared entrance may be used.

And the cost? That depends on what you are taking and what work you ask us to do. So check which services, any storage and any costs for access to the address are included in your quote. Keep identity documents, medication and things for the first night close at hand.

Plan together

Hand over now, move in later

Is there a gap between handing over your old home empty and getting the keys in Germany? Give us both dates as early as you can. We will then discuss a later delivery to your new address and container storage (page in Dutch).

Where will the van park?

No fixed loading bay at your new home? Tell us what the street looks like and we will agree who applies to the municipality for permission and who puts up the signs. Allow for the processing time.

A bag you carry yourself

Set aside ID, medication, chargers and bedding for the first night. Put them in a bag that travels with you. That way they are to hand while the van is still being unloaded.

  • Your loading and unloading spot

Include the details of the loading and unloading spot when you send your request to De Bresser. Agree in writing who arranges any permission and signs. The competent authority decides on the application.

  • Berlin: temporary no-stopping zone

For a temporary no-stopping zone, you apply for an order from the road traffic authority of the district concerned. The city gives an average processing time of about four weeks. That is no guarantee your application will be ready within four weeks. The authority does not supply the signs; talk to a specialist company about putting them up. Read Berlin's guidance on no-stopping zones for removals (in German).

  • Düsseldorf: exemption from a no-stopping zone

To park or stop within an existing no-stopping zone, you need an exemption permit. The usual lead time is fourteen days. Since 1 June 2026 a shorter lead time is possible at a higher fee; applying less than two council working days ahead is not possible. The city does not put up the signs. Check Düsseldorf's application conditions (in German) for your situation.

Moving to Germany: what does it cost?

The price depends on what comes with you and what work you want done. Send us both addresses, the volume of your belongings and your preferred dates. Mention any help you want with packing, assembly or temporary storage. Ask which services and which access costs your quote includes.

How we map out your move

  1. By phone or WhatsApp

You call or WhatsApp us about your plans. We go through what needs to be moved and what information is still needed for your quote.

  2. By video survey

Use your phone to show what needs to be moved, from the living room to the attic. That way the adviser can see your belongings and the way out.

  3. Home visit

The adviser looks at your belongings, access to the property and your wishes on site. You can ask questions about the approach and the costs straight away.

Customs and arrangements

Do you need customs papers for Germany?

Germany is an EU member state. For household goods leaving the Netherlands for Germany, there is therefore generally no customs declaration to make in either country. De Bresser still always draws up an inventory list. We number every item and box and record the contents of each box. You get your own copy, so you can see exactly what is travelling.

Cars and motorbikes may be subject to extra rules. Report special items separately and check what applies to your goods and route. Dutch Customs explains the rules for moving within the EU (in Dutch). If your goods or route do need customs formalities after all, De Bresser handles them. You supply the necessary details and documents. Registering in Germany, deregistering in the Netherlands and other personal matters are separate. Our guide to emigrating to Germany (in Dutch) is written for Dutch nationals; with another passport, check the residence rules that apply to you.

Also discuss insurance for your belongings (page in Dutch). Have it recorded which route and which work the agreement covers, including any storage. Read the quote and its terms and conditions before you confirm the move.

For your move

A list that adds up

Write down what you want transported and which items need extra care. Has a large wardrobe or an extra batch of boxes been added since the survey? Let us know, so the quote and schedule can be reviewed.

Read the agreements first

Our insurance page (in Dutch) shows which cover goes with your move to Germany. Discuss the sum insured, any exclusions and arrangements if your things are stored first.

Packing for abroad

Well packed for your international move

For your move to Germany, we recommend letting us pack your belongings. A few personal boxes are fine to do yourself. Our movers pack china, furniture and other fragile items with care.

Do it yourself

A few personal boxes

  • You can pack a few boxes of clothes and personal items yourself. Agree with us in advance what you want to do yourself.

  • Tell us what is in your own boxes. De Bresser adds the contents to the inventory list, numbers everything and gives you a copy.

  • Let us pack crockery, glassware and items that need extra protection. See our packing tips (in Dutch) for boxes you pack yourself.

  • Keep your passport, medication, keys and things for the first few days separate. Do not put them in with the belongings we take.

Prepare your packing

Our advice

We pack your belongings

  • We protect your belongings all round with bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard and packing paper. We match the material to the item.

  • Edges and corners of furniture get extra protection. We fill empty spaces with packing paper, so items have less room to move inside the packaging.

  • For fragile or unusually shaped items, we arrange custom crates where needed. When loading, we make sure your belongings are well protected in the removal van.

  • Together we check if you are taking any special items that are subject to extra rules. We discuss those before the boxes are sealed.

Can I pack my own things?

You can pack a few personal boxes yourself. For the rest of your belongings, we recommend leaving the packing to us. Agree which boxes and fragile items our team prepares when you book the packing service. That way it is clear before moving day who does what.

Ongelooflijk!

  • 8 out of 10
