From the Netherlands to New York City

Moving to New York with your belongings to your new address

An apartment in Manhattan or a house in Brooklyn: if you are moving to New York, your plan starts with the address. De Bresser goes through packing, transport, customs formalities and delivery in New York City with you. Tell us the floor and building access too, so the quote includes both from the start.

Your New York City address

From your current home to the right front door

This page covers moving to New York from the Netherlands, specifically to New York City. Give us the borough, street, ZIP code and apartment number. Also tell us who will receive your things and from which date you can get into your new home.

A floor number does not tell us how a sofa gets upstairs. Show us how you get from the street to your home: the entrance, any steps, corridors, corners and the lift. With measurements and photos we can agree beforehand which furniture needs taking apart and where extra preparation is needed.

No final address yet? Tell us which destination is already known and what is still undecided. We explain which details the quote is based on and which parts need confirming later. That way you can also build temporary storage into the plan.

What do we know about your new home?

Check the lift dimensions too

Ask for the door opening and inside dimensions of the lift. Find out whether you must use the goods lift (freight elevator) and whether it has to be booked. A large lift only helps if your furniture also fits through the lobby and the hallway.

Map the carrying route

Tell us the number of floors, the stair width and any tight turns. Photograph any stoop or narrow front door too. List heavy or bulky pieces separately, so we can agree the approach before moving day.

Be clear about what may still change

Tell us which borough or neighbourhood you have in mind and when you expect to know more. A later change of address, floor or access can affect the work. Have the final delivery confirmed as soon as your address is fixed.

Preparing your belongings

Decide what goes and how it is protected

Walk through your home, storage room and garage before we assess the volume. Which furniture do you want to take? What stays behind? Point out fragile items, art, instruments and large appliances separately, and tell us which boxes you plan to pack yourself.

De Bresser makes a numbered inventory list and matches the packing to your belongings and the way they travel. For boxes you fill yourself, tell us clearly what is inside. Flag new purchases and special goods so we can discuss how they should be handled. Keep passports, personal documents and what you need for your first weeks out of the shipment.

Your points of contact

Talk your move through with our team

Henry, Marjolein and Timo go through your plans with you. Send us what your building management has told you and let us know about changes to your departure date or new home. We record what work is part of your move and what information is still missing.

Access to your building

Get the building's move-in rules early

Ask your landlord, managing agent or co-op or condo board to set out in writing how a move works at your address. Ask which entrance you may use, on which days and at what times delivery can happen, and who lets the crew in.

Also ask whether the building requires a Certificate of Insurance (COI), which is proof of insurance from the mover doing the work. If it does, have the exact requirements and the way to submit it sent to you, and forward them to us before the final schedule is set. We can then discuss which documents the agreed work calls for.

A moving slot in the building and a suitable loading spot on the street are separate matters. Check both. Tell us about roadworks at the street or entrance, an out-of-service freight elevator or other restrictions as soon as you know, so we can plan around the actual situation.

Three arrangements to confirm

Confirm the permitted delivery window

Ask which hours are available, how you reserve them and what the procedure is if the schedule changes. Tell us too whether a superintendent or doorman will be on site that day. The window has to fit the confirmed transport and delivery plan.

Record the route through the building

Check whether the building asks for a lift reservation, floor protection or use of a separate entrance. Forward the building's instructions to us. These arrangements vary by address, so do not expect the procedure from a previous home to apply.

Make sure the recipient can be reached

Agree who will open up and receive your belongings. Share that person's phone number and, where relevant, the contact details of building management. Let us know in good time about changes to keys, entry codes or availability.

  • Go through the customs file before departure

Household goods that leave the Netherlands for a non-EU country need an export declaration along with an inventory list. We handle the customs formalities that apply and prepare the numbered list. You provide the personal details and evidence requested. Talk through the American import side before shipping as well.

Dutch Customs on household goods (in Dutch)

  • Assess the loading spot at your address

Tell us where the entrance is and, if you can, send photos of the street and the signs posted there. NYC DOT sets separate rules for commercial vehicles and special zones. The carrier doing the work should judge where loading and unloading is allowed at your address; a booking with the building does not settle that by itself.

NYC DOT on truck parking and loading

  • Match the route to the vehicle

New York City has designated truck routes and restrictions on parkways. The carrier doing the work has to check the current route and the local signs. Tell us about known roadworks or an awkward approach to your building. The NYC DOT information helps in preparing that drive.

Volume is one part of the price. Packing, access, the floor, building rules, customs clearance and any storage also shape the work. Make sure the quote records what is included and how any extra costs will be agreed.

  1. Share your departure point and New York destination

Call or WhatsApp us with your departure town, NYC address and preferred dates. No address yet? Then tell us which details are already settled.

  2. Show us your belongings and the access

Book a video survey to show what you are taking. Include the storage room and fragile pieces. Add measurements, photos and the instructions from your New York building.

  3. Line up the quote and the schedule

We go through the survey, the work and any missing information. Check that collection, transport, clearance and delivery match what you want. Also discuss storage and how to change the delivery appointment.

Your shipment and personal preparation

Keep moving documents and residence papers apart

The documents for your belongings go in the moving file. Your personal right to live or work in the United States needs its own preparation, and most people need a visa for it. Plan the move around the steps that apply to you.

De Bresser prepares the numbered inventory and handles the customs formalities that apply to the shipment. You list everything you are taking and supply personal details and evidence. Tell us straight away if your travel plans or delivery address change.

Sorting out your residence status as well? Read preparing to emigrate to the US (in Dutch). For your belongings and American import clearance in general, see our guide to US shipments.

Office space with white desks and cabinets

What is part of the moving agreement?

Make the contents of the shipment clear

List large, fragile and newly bought items separately. Also tell us what should follow later or stay in the Netherlands. You receive the inventory list from De Bresser; check it against the agreed contents.

Discuss cover for each stage

Let us know what your belongings and any special pieces are worth. Ask what the insurance covers at each stage: collection, transport, any storage and delivery. Have the conditions and exclusions recorded. A COI for the building, if required, is a separate document to arrange.

Keep essentials within reach

Take personal documents, clothes and anything else you need for your first weeks with you. Staying in a furnished home for a while? Then discuss which items you want delivered there and whether the rest goes into storage first.

What help suits your move?

Choose the help that suits your belongings and your home. We discuss what each part needs and include the agreed work in the quote. The service pages below are in Dutch.

Packing for abroad

Well packed for your international move

At the survey, discuss which personal boxes you want to fill yourself and what our movers will pack. Point out fragile, heavy and unusual items separately so we can prepare their protection before moving day.

Do it yourself

A few personal boxes

  • Keep passports, personal papers, medicines and essentials for your first weeks out of the shipment.

  • Only pack the personal boxes we agreed beforehand. Use sturdy boxes and see our packing tips (in Dutch).

  • Tell us exactly what each of your own boxes contains. De Bresser adds this to the official numbered inventory list, and you receive a copy.

  • Point out breakable, valuable and special items at the survey. Let our movers prepare how they are packed.

Prepare your packing

Our advice

We pack your belongings

  • We survey your belongings and discuss which protective materials suit the furniture and loose items.

  • We protect delicate surfaces, edges and corners with materials such as bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard and packing paper.

  • For especially fragile or unusual pieces, we discuss custom-made crates. We match the packing to the transport and the agreed carrying route.

  • We prepare the numbered inventory for your packed belongings, showing what each box contains. De Bresser also handles the customs formalities that apply to the shipment.

What do you need from me for a New York moving quote?

Give us your departure address in the Netherlands, your destination in New York City and your preferred dates. Include the borough, ZIP code, floor, lift or stairs and any building instructions. A survey of your belongings lets us discuss the work. Tell us which address or schedule details are still missing.

Does my building need a Certificate of Insurance?

Check with the manager or landlord of your particular building. If a COI is needed, have the exact requirements and submission procedure sent to you. Share that information before the work is booked in.

Can you deliver my furniture if there is no lift?

Discuss the floor and carrying route during the survey. Send measurements and photos of the entrance, stairs and turns, and list heavy or large furniture separately. Based on that, we discuss which approach is possible and which work should go into the quote.

Do I need to arrange a parking spot for the removal vehicle myself?

Give us details of the street and entrance, and agree who checks the loading options. The carrier doing the work has to follow local rules and signs. A building booking is not the same as permission to park on the street. See the NYC DOT information; each address is assessed on its own merits.

What if my belongings arrive before my home is available?

Raise that possibility when the schedule is drawn up. We can include temporary storage in the moving agreement. Have it recorded where your things will be stored, which costs and cover apply and how the later delivery will be arranged. Report a changed key or handover date as early as possible.

Is the ship's arrival date also my moving day in New York?

Plan them as separate moments. After the ship arrives, the agreed clearance and onward delivery still have to line up, so match your building's delivery window to the confirmed schedule. Read more about the shipment on our United States page.

Ongelooflijk!
