Moving to the USA with your furniture and personal belongings

If you are moving to the USA, your new address determines more than the destination on the container. Transport from the port and access to your home matter too. De Bresser plans the whole route with you, from packing to delivery.

Your belongings to the United States

What are you taking to America?

The dining table, the bed, the bikes: what do you want to use again in your new home? Show us what is in the loft and the garage too. A complete survey lets us assess the volume and the packing your belongings need.

For shipping furniture to America, we check which suits your belongings: a dedicated container or shared container space (groupage). Groupage means your goods travel with other cargo. Ask which option is available on your route and how consolidation and unloading fit into the schedule.

Give us your US city, state and ZIP code, even if the house number is still to follow. A quote to the port of arrival does not automatically include transport to your front door. Our page on moving overseas (in Dutch) explains more about the preparation.

Things to arrange

What do you want to keep?

Go through your home room by room and note what you want to use again in the US. Do not forget the loft, garage and shed. Unsure about a piece? Show it to us during the survey anyway.

Travelling with other cargo

Ask whether shared container space is offered on your route to the United States. Your belongings then share the container with other cargo. Discuss what consolidating and unloading mean for your departure date and delivery.

Your US address

Send us the city, state and ZIP code, even if the house number comes later. Ask whether door-to-door transport is in the quote. A price that ends at the port of arrival does not cover it by default.

Custom crates

Packed for the container and the final leg

Your belongings sail to the United States in a dedicated container or in shared space, then continue from the port to your address.

We wrap your belongings fully in packing paper, bubble wrap and corrugated cardboard, and put tabletops or artwork into a custom-made crate if needed. During loading we strap everything down firmly in the container. If you share container space with other cargo, the numbers on our inventory list keep your boxes recognisable.

Arrival and costs

From arrival port to your US address

A ship that has docked is not yet at your front door. Import clearance has to happen first; only then is your shipment driven to your home. Tell us when you get the keys and who will receive your belongings if you cannot be there yet.

Does your apartment building have rules for the lift, the loading area or moving times? Ask the building manager in advance. Photos and measurements of the entrance help us judge whether large furniture will fit and whether extra handling is needed.

The cost of a move to the USA depends on the volume, the packing, the transport method and the route to your address. Make sure the quote states which port charges, handling and delivery are included. Also discuss storage and any extra transport if your final address is confirmed later.

Plan together

From ship to front door

Once the ship is in, customs clearance is handled before the drive to your home. Give us the date you receive the keys and the name of whoever will take delivery if you have not arrived yet.

Your building's rules

Living in an apartment? Check with the building manager about using the lift, the loading area and moving hours. Send photos and measurements of the entrance and stairwell so we can assess large furniture beforehand.

What does the price include?

Ask for a quote that lists port charges, handling and delivery separately. Will your final address follow later? Then discuss storage and any extra transport as well, so you know what may be added.

  • A file for unaccompanied goods

CBP uses Form 3299 for a declaration claiming free entry of unaccompanied personal and household effects. Which parts you complete depends partly on your residency status. De Bresser arranges the customs formalities and goes through the details and attachments needed with you.

    View CBP Form 3299

  • Declare new purchases separately

Do not tuck new furniture, equipment or items meant for other people in among your used belongings. Mention them during the survey and keep the receipts. Claiming an exemption does not mean every item will be admitted free of duty.

Read the information on the import form

  • Prepare the Dutch export too

For a move from the Netherlands to a country outside the EU, Dutch Customs asks for an export declaration as well as an inventory list. De Bresser takes care of these formalities and tells you which details to supply before loading.

How we plan your move to America

Give us your departure address, destination and preferred period. We will discuss how we can view your belongings, so the quote matches the things you want to take.

  1. By phone or WhatsApp

Tell us about your plans by phone or on WhatsApp. Say whether your American address is already known and roughly how much you are taking.

  2. By video survey

In a video survey you show us what you are taking with you. Include the things in the storage room, shed and cupboards in the walk-through.

  3. Home visit

We discuss whether an adviser can visit you to look at your belongings, the packing work and access to the property.

Your moving file

Your inventory list, drawn up by De Bresser

Whenever goods cross a border, the inventory list is drawn up by De Bresser. We number all your belongings and note the number and contents of every box. A copy is yours to keep. Packing some personal boxes yourself? Let us know what is in them so they appear correctly on the list too.

For the USA, the file covers both your own arrival and the arrival of your belongings. Keep your travel documents and details of your residence status to hand. De Bresser deals with the customs formalities and guides the preparation of CBP Form 3299. You supply the required details, supporting documents and signatures. In general you need a visa; which one depends on your nationality and the type of stay. Our guide to emigrating to the United States (in Dutch) covers the personal steps.

Are some pieces of furniture staying in the Netherlands for now? Tell us before the list and the transport are finalised. See also how to prepare for moving abroad (in Dutch).

Your documents to hand

A list that matches the shipment

Adding a cupboard or an extra box? Tell De Bresser and we will update the inventory list. That way the numbers on your belongings and the descriptions in the file stay in line.

Plan your trip and the shipment separately

Share your arrival details and keep the confirmed transport schedule to hand. Have us check when import clearance can take place and when delivery to your home is possible.

Moving back to the Netherlands later

Import conditions apply again when you move back. Read about moving back to the Netherlands and keep the documents from this move.

Packing for abroad

Well packed for your international move

As movers to the USA, we advise you to let us pack your household goods. A few personal boxes are fine to pack yourself. Our movers pack crockery, furniture and anything fragile with care.

Do it yourself

A few personal boxes

  • You can pack a few boxes of clothes and personal items yourself. Agree with us in advance what you want to do yourself.

  • Tell us the contents of the boxes you pack yourself. De Bresser makes the official inventory list, numbers all items and records the number and contents of each box. You get a copy.

  • Let us pack crockery, glassware and items that need extra protection. See our packing tips (in Dutch) for boxes you pack yourself.

  • Keep your passport, medication, keys and things for the first few days separate. Do not put them in with the belongings we take.

Prepare your packing

Our advice

We pack your belongings

  • We protect your belongings all round with bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard and packing paper. We match the material to the item.

  • Edges and corners of furniture get extra protection. We fill empty spaces with packing paper, so items have less room to move inside the packaging.

  • For fragile or unusually shaped items, we arrange custom crates where needed. When loading, we make sure your belongings are well protected in the container.

  • Our advice covers what you can take to America and which items need a closer look at customs. Any restrictions are discussed before the boxes are sealed.

Does ‘moving to America’ mean the United States?

Yes. This page is about moving from the Netherlands to the USA. You will find separate information for Canada and Latin America. Always include the country, city and postal code in your request.

Can I book part of a container to the US?

Ask whether shared container space is available for your destination. Your volume and the schedule help decide whether it is a good fit. Also ask us to confirm in writing what combining cargo means for departure and delivery.

How much does a move to America cost?

The amount of belongings, the packing and transport to your address together set the price. Ask for a quote that clearly describes port charges, import clearance, delivery and any storage. Import duties and extra work are not automatically included.

Do I need to make the inventory list myself?

No. The official inventory list is our job: De Bresser numbers everything you ship and notes what each box contains. You keep a copy. Just let us know what you put in your own personal boxes.

Are my belongings automatically duty-free?

No. US customs assesses the import based on your situation and the goods. The form for unaccompanied goods is a claim, not a guarantee. Have new purchases and special items assessed separately before shipping.

What do we agree on insurance and storage?

Agree in writing which insurance covers your move and any storage, including the terms for self-packed boxes and valuable pieces. If your home is not available yet, we discuss where your things can be stored in the meantime and how that is charged.

Ongelooflijk!

  • 8 out of 10
