Moving to Canada with a plan for what arrives later

When moving to Canada from the Netherlands, you fly while your furniture takes another route. Your own arrival and the declaration of your belongings then have to line up. De Bresser prepares the inventory list and discusses transport to your new home with you.

Moving from the Netherlands to Canada

What travels with you, what comes later?

Keep your passports and essentials for the first few days with you. The sofa, bookcases and most boxes can be shipped separately. Make that split during the survey, so it is clear what you need on the way and what goes in the shipment.

For shipping furniture to Canada, we discuss which options are available: a sole-use container or shared container space. Show us which pieces take up a lot of room and which need extra protection. Items in your shed or storage unit also count towards the volume.

Besides the city, give us the province and postal code of your Canadian address. Transport from the port of arrival is part of the preparation. You can read more about the choices for a sea shipment under overseas moves (in Dutch).

Things to arrange

What goes with you on the plane

Passports, medicines and essentials for the first days travel with you to Canada. Your furniture follows later by sea. Set these items aside before packing starts, so they do not end up in the shipment.

The shed and storage count too

Walk through the shed and your storage unit as well, because what is there helps decide the volume. Point out pieces that need extra protection. Then we discuss whether a sole-use container or shared space suits your shipment.

Your full Canadian address

Give the province and postal code as well as the city. Not everything settled yet? Tell us what you already know. Transport from the port of arrival is part of preparing your overseas move (in Dutch).

Custom crates

Well packed for the shipment that follows you

You fly to Canada and your belongings follow by sea, so we pack everything for loading, the crossing and delivery.

Large pieces and items needing extra protection get wrapped on every side in bubble wrap, packing paper and corrugated cardboard, and crated to measure where needed. Once loaded, everything is firmly secured inside the container. Every box appears on the inventory list we draw up, with its number and contents.

Your points of contact

Your team for moving to Canada

Your own arrival in Canada and the later arrival of your furniture need to be coordinated. Henry, Marjolein and Timo go through the schedule and the file with you and the partner agents we work with. Tell us which items will follow later and which address details are already settled.

Your keys and your shipment

Plan delivery right up to your home

Living in temporary accommodation in Canada at first? Tell us which furniture will fit there and what should remain in the Netherlands for the time being. Then we can discuss storage before everything is packed and on its way to an address that has no room for it yet.

If you are settling in Canada, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) advises that your belongings arrive at the same time as you or after you. So plan your travel date and the transport schedule together. Arrival at the port and a delivery appointment are two separate steps.

What does a move to Canada cost? That depends on how much you take, how it is packed and the transport to your final home. Make sure the quote also covers port handling, any storage and access to your address. Ask what happens to the costs if your key handover date changes.

Plan together

What fits in your first home?

Starting out in temporary housing in Canada? List the furniture that fits there; the rest stays in the Netherlands for now. Before the packing day is fixed, ask about private storage (page in Dutch).

First you, then your belongings

When you settle in Canada, the CBSA advises that your goods arrive with you or after you. Give us your flight date as soon as you know it. If your travel dates change, tell us straight away so we can review the transport schedule.

Arrival in port is not delivery

A ship in port does not mean your furniture is in your home. Ask whether port handling is in the quote. Also agree how you will hear when the delivery appointment can be made.

  • The list on your first arrival

According to the CBSA, you hand over the list of your goods when you first arrive, even if you have no belongings with you at that point. Goods arriving later must be on that original list to qualify under your exemption.

    Read about goods to follow

  • Settling differs from a temporary stay

The rules for people settling in Canada for the first time differ from those for returning residents and temporary residents. Have your residence status and the conditions that apply checked before you count on duty- and tax-free import.

    See the CBSA explanation

  • Used belongings and new items

Under the settler rules, the goods concerned must have been owned, possessed and used by you before you arrive. Declare new or leased items separately. Goods that meet these conditions can still be subject to other import restrictions.

How we discuss your move to Canada

Give us your departure address, destination and preferred period. We will discuss how we can view your belongings, so the quote matches the things you want to take.

  1. By phone or WhatsApp

Phone or WhatsApp us to talk about your plans. Mention whether you already have an address in Canada and roughly how much you are taking.

  2. By video survey

In a video survey you show us what you are taking with you. Include the things in the storage room, shed and cupboards in the walk-through.

  3. Home visit

We discuss whether an adviser can visit you to look at your belongings, the packing work and access to the property.

Documents that travel with you

Your inventory list ready before your flight

De Bresser prepares the inventory list for every international move and numbers all your belongings. For each box we record the number and contents. You receive your own copy. For Canada, we also discuss which goods come with you and which will be sent on later.

If you pack some personal boxes yourself, list their contents for us. Keep your copy of the list with your travel documents. Canadian customs describes the declaration on arrival on its page Moving or returning to Canada. Get confirmation of which documents apply to your residence status. The entry documents you need also depend on your nationality. Our page on preparing your departure for Canada (in Dutch) covers the steps before you leave.

De Bresser arranges the Canadian import formalities and the Dutch export declaration (page in Dutch). You supply the details and documents requested and follow the personal declaration instructions when you arrive. Selling furniture before you leave, or adding an extra box? Let us know. With a later part shipment, the list and the actual contents must still match.

Office space with white desks and cabinets

Your documents to hand

Take your copy with you

Keep your inventory list and any supporting documents with your travel documents. You need them within reach on arrival in Canada, while the container may still be in transit.

Temporary or permanent address

Make clear whether your first address will also be the delivery address. A second move within Canada needs separate transport arrangements; include them in your request.

From Canada to the Netherlands

Keep your import papers and inventory list. If you move back to the Netherlands, we review what goes with you and which import rules apply.

Packing for abroad

Well packed for your international move

As movers to Canada, we advise you to let us pack your household goods. You can pack a handful of personal boxes yourself. Our team carefully wraps crockery, furniture and other breakables.

Do it yourself

A few personal boxes

  • You can pack a few boxes of clothes and personal items yourself. Agree with us in advance what you want to do yourself.

  • Tell us the contents of the boxes you pack yourself. De Bresser makes the official inventory list, numbers all items and records the number and contents of each box. You get a copy.

  • Let us pack crockery, glassware and items that need extra protection. See our packing tips (in Dutch) for boxes you pack yourself.

  • Keep your passport, medication, keys and things for the first few days separate. Do not put them in with the belongings we take.

Prepare your packing

Our advice

We pack your belongings

  • We protect your belongings all round with bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard and packing paper. We match the material to the item.

  • Edges and corners of furniture get extra protection. We fill empty spaces with packing paper, so items have less room to move inside the packaging.

  • For fragile or unusually shaped items, we arrange custom crates where needed. When loading, we make sure your belongings are well protected in the container.

  • We tell you what you can take to Canada and what calls for extra attention at customs. We go over possible restrictions before any box is closed.

What does ‘goods to follow’ mean for a move to Canada?

These are goods imported after your own arrival. According to the CBSA, they must be on the original list to qualify for your exemption. De Bresser makes the inventory list; discuss before departure how you present it when you first arrive.

Do the same rules apply to a temporary stay?

Not automatically. Temporary residents, people settling for the first time and returning residents can fall under different arrangements. Have your situation assessed against the CBSA explanation before the shipment leaves.

Can my belongings arrive before I do?

Agree this in advance. For settlers, the CBSA advises that your goods arrive with you or later. An earlier arrival can mean storage and extra handling. Have the schedule checked before you fix the transport date.

What details are needed for a quote?

Give us your departure address, Canadian city, province and postal code, preferred period and the volume of your belongings. Photos or a video survey help with large furniture and access to the home. Also tell us if your new address is temporary at first.

Can I leave part of my belongings in the Netherlands?

Yes. Discuss which items can wait in storage in the Netherlands. Before your first arrival, have it checked how goods you send later should appear on the Canadian list.

How do I arrange insurance for my shipment?

Discuss insurance for the transport and any storage separately. Have the conditions recorded for self-packed boxes and for valuables. Tell us which items have special value before your belongings are packed.

Ongelooflijk!

  • 8 out of 10
